Our zine was created in 2005 and computer technology is always on the move! Pages 17-19 of The Dvorak Zine illustrated step-by-step directions for how to set up Dvorak on your Windows, Mac, or Linux computer way back then. Below we've embeded a few video tutorials that are more up-to-date!
Once you have Dvorak installed you can use these free, online typing tutors to learn how to touch type, using the new layout. It's okay if you're still learning with a QWERTY keyboard - with touch typing you shouldn't be looking at your fingers anyway!
It can help when learning Dvorak to have the entire layout visible next to your computer. To aid with that, we've prepared a printable PDF that has a key map on it (as shown below). Print it out, fold it in half, and it will stand up on your desk like a tent.
If you would like to purchase an actual Dvorak keyboard, below are a few retailers who offer this hardware for sale!
Kenesis Ergo keyboards have a Dvorak key set available
Another way to set up a Dvorak keyboard is to cover up those QWERTY keys! Use the link below to download a PDF of the sticker shown here. Print it out on sticker paper, cut out the letters and place them on top of your keyboard.
It is also possible on most computers to take off the keys and then place them back down in the Dvorak layout. We have done this with both laptops and desktop keyboards. Here is a time lapse video of someone doing it with a laptop.
PLEASE NOTE: If you attempt this, you do so at your own risk! We are not responsible for any damage to your laptop or computer. It's a good idea to test it out on an old keyboard before trying it out on a new computer. Good luck!
